IC Information:
Character Name: Mami Tomoe
Character Canon: Puella Magi Madoka Magica. Due to the whole ‘timelines’ thing in PMMM due to one character with time-travelling abilities, she comes from one singular timeline in the manga, without memories of the anime and other ones. Which… could count as AU, since the anime is the only official timeline.
Canon Point: After her death in The Different Story manga.
History: Following Drama CD and The Different Story history
Personality:
She’s not crazy. No, really, she isn't.
From the moment she becomes a Magical Girl, she suffers from Survivor’s Guilt due to the abrupt nature of her wish and the fact her family is gone. However, Mami is grateful for a second chance at life and at justice. Her Survivor’s Guilt causes her to strive towards saving and helping as many people from the Witches as possible, almost to make up for her selfish wish. She attempts to make the world a safe place, acting like an altruistic, selfless savior and warm mentor to any newer Magical Girls she might meet (Kyouko and Sayaka, for instance).
From this, it’s clear that Mami is a very kind person, in the simplest of terms. She tries to think of others as much as possible, believing that the despair and pain of a minority (Magical Girls) is justified to help the majority (rest of society). This is why she does not support other Magical Girls living selfishly, like Kyouko who farms Witches just to live comfortably with no thought to normal civilians, and Homura, who she mistakenly believed was purposely leading Madoka away from a contract in order to have less competition. Mami doesn’t just act like a selfless savior, she tries to be one, vanquishing evil and all that. She keeps up a cool, polite demeanor, but the moment someone does something she doesn’t agree with, she’s not afraid to speak out against them.
However, because of the death of her close family and her general isolation from normal people due to her status as a Magical Girl, she rarely has time to make friends and thus feels lonely most of the time. Yet, she doesn’t want to selfishly take up the time of others with her own problems, and cries alone, putting on a strong face for her students so they need not worry for her. Her idealistic and perhaps obsessive pursuits of justice lead to her not having much teamwork opportunities with less philanthropic Magical Girls (read: basically everyone else), which bothers her more than she’d like to admit. However, despite being lonely and almost purposely being so, she craves companionship, and so when she tastes the friendship that Sayaka and Madoka offer, she admits she is ‘selfish and lonely’ and wants to stay together with them.
However, her entire world and little confidence is all built upon the fact that she thinks herself a champion of justice, and when she drops that title in The Different Story, as a useful and good friend to others. In the anime, when she figures out the true nature of Magical Girls, she makes a calculated decision to attempt to kill everyone as a last act of justice and bravery, before being killed herself. In The Different Story, she doesn’t get a chance to do so, and by the time she does she decides against it. However, Mami becomes much more unstable, though she was always easily provoked by anyone who seemed to deny and fight against her justice.
Losing her will to fight, she begins to think of her motivation- to save others and make up for her selfish wish, being a champion of justice- as invalid now, and she is nothing more as a liability. Therefore, she kills herself later in order to not be a burden to the others. She functions and revolves on how useful she was to others. If she begins to think herself useless, Mami begins to break down, or strive towards fixing that. Still though, she desires friendship and a cure to her loneliness, even putting aside selflessness for that as well.
She also craves admiration, or at least, positive feeling towards her, as seen with the huge boom she made when she first met Madoka and Sayaka to make them gape in awe.
Pokemon: Flabébé, yellow flower form. Looks like a normal one, but wearing yellow ribbons around her ears, curled like her twintails in human form.
Aura Colour: Yellow
